"The main conflict of this story is to find a serial killer before he/she kills more people. This problem started before the book even began. This is a confict because the book is about finding the killer so it will play out through out the story and not in one chapter. This was even said at the back of the book as it writes, "...someone is murdering families again, re-crating in detail Blackwood's crimes."
Obviously the main character is trying to solve this case as he is a detective so thats all he is doing at the moment. The conflict is both internal and external as the murders just started happening and continues as the story progresses and the one solving the case was involved in a similar situation when he was a teenager as said at the back yet again. It states, "Homicide detective, John Calino is certain that his own family-his wife and three children-will be targets, just as his parents and sisters were victims on that distant night when he was fourteen and killed their slayer.

My main character in this story is a homicide detective named John Calvino. He is currently on a case about (obviously) some murders that took place 6 days before the book began. John is a busy man who is on the rush as he doesn't have time to turn on even a simple radio and even parks illegaly just to tell some information. But the past also has an effect on how he is as he is haunted by the screams of dying women as said in the 5th paragraph on the first page "The thump of the wipers matched the slow, heavy rhythm of John Calvino's heart. He did not play the radio. Th only sounds were the engine, the windshield wipers, the rain, the swish of tires turning on the wet pavement, and a memory of the screams of dying women." and on the 2nd page it writes (this is about what he does after), " Near the main entrance, he parked illegaly under the portico." In the story, I belive that John will be the same because 1, there are more parts to the story so John will most likely be different in those and 2, he needs to be on the rush when ever he can as he is solving a case.
A scene that plays a huge part in the series in when Frodo was part of two meetings. The reason why is because the two scenes are about Frodo himself. The first meeting was quite small only only a handful of new characters were introduced. This meeting was not that special as they only talked about what was going on like in page 256. It reads, "Throughout the rest of the meal they talked together, but Frodo listened more that he spoke; for news of the Shire, apart from the Ring, seemed small and far-away and unimportant, while Golin had much to tell of events in the northern regions of Wilderland." This tells us that the meeting wasn't that big, but we got introduced to more characters that will help Frodo. After that Frodo goes to a Council meeting (the meeting is for the Council of Elrond.) During this meeting, more characters are introduced to the story and this meeting talks about the history if the ring. In page 272 it reads, "They all listened while Elrond in his clear voice spoke of Sauron and the Rings of power, and their forging in the Second Age." This tells us that the meeting was mostly about the Ring and now the main characters know more about what they are up against. With all that said, with a lot new characters introduced and the fact that more about the Ring was discovered, I believe that something major is going to happen and will probably change the direction of the book.
Still the same topic choice, another character had just been named. His name is Sam, another Hobbit just like Frodo. Sams role in the story is to be the companion of Frodo as they travel to reach Modor, the only place where the ring Frodo has can be destroyed as said by Gandalf in page 67 when he was explaining how to destroy the ring, "There is only one way: to find the Cracks of doom in the depths of Orodruin, the Fire-mountain, and cast the Ring in there, if you really wish to destroy it, to put it beyond the grasp of the Enemy for ever." and later said to Sam in page 71, "I have thought of something better than that. Something to shut your mouth, and punish you properly for listening. You shall go away with Mr. Frodo!" Some characteristics to describe Sam is well... all over the place. In page 71, Sam was acting strange. He said this, "'Me,sir! cried Sam, springing up like a dog invited for a walk. 'Me go see the Elves and all! Hooray!' he shouted, and he then burst into tears." Well I still think that Sam will be a dynamic character. Just like the Ring will control Frodo at one point, I believe that Sam will help Frodo fight off the power of the Ring. But to do that, Sam must be brave as Frodo might be dangerous when the is no longer in control.
The main character if this story (from what I've read)is Frodo Baggins and his role in the book (again from what I've read)is to destroy a magical ring that has caused major problems before. The rings magic is so powerful that anyone wearing it will soon be obsessed with it and will not let it go as said in page 60 "A ring of power looks after itself, Frodo. It might slip of treacherously but the keeper never abandons it." Frodos characteristics as far as I've read is seems only to be curious. Frodo always asks questions whether its a small question or a question that can't be answered. From pages 60-67 he asks questions. A small question he asked was "But if he hated it, why didn't he get rid of it, or go away and leave it?" which was shortly answered by Gandalf, a wise wizard. But then he asks another question in page 67 in where Gandalf says, "Such questions cannot be answered." The main character in this book will be dynamic because of two things. One, he is going on an adventure with a magical ring in where he will experience many hardships and two, its the ring itself as it tries to take over Frodos body as said many times.
