"The main conflict of this story is to find a serial killer before he/she kills more people. This problem started before the book even began. This is a confict because the book is about finding the killer so it will play out through out the story and not in one chapter. This was even said at the back of the book as it writes, "...someone is murdering families again, re-crating in detail Blackwood's crimes."
Obviously the main character is trying to solve this case as he is a detective so thats all he is doing at the moment. The conflict is both internal and external as the murders just started happening and continues as the story progresses and the one solving the case was involved in a similar situation when he was a teenager as said at the back yet again. It states, "Homicide detective, John Calino is certain that his own family-his wife and three children-will be targets, just as his parents and sisters were victims on that distant night when he was fourteen and killed their slayer.

My main character in this story is a homicide detective named John Calvino. He is currently on a case about (obviously) some murders that took place 6 days before the book began. John is a busy man who is on the rush as he doesn't have time to turn on even a simple radio and even parks illegaly just to tell some information. But the past also has an effect on how he is as he is haunted by the screams of dying women as said in the 5th paragraph on the first page "The thump of the wipers matched the slow, heavy rhythm of John Calvino's heart. He did not play the radio. Th only sounds were the engine, the windshield wipers, the rain, the swish of tires turning on the wet pavement, and a memory of the screams of dying women." and on the 2nd page it writes (this is about what he does after), " Near the main entrance, he parked illegaly under the portico." In the story, I belive that John will be the same because 1, there are more parts to the story so John will most likely be different in those and 2, he needs to be on the rush when ever he can as he is solving a case.
